Grateful For My Artist Residency!

November 12, 2013  •  Leave a Comment

Our days are often such a flurry.  I think that it's important to take pause and ponder what one might be thankful for.  I personally feel the essence of November with every part of me.

I have been spinning in my mind since returning from my Artist Residency at The Milkweed Mercantile at Dancing Rabbit's Eco-Village.  It too was a flurry!!

Never have I taken so many images in such a short period of time, nor have I ever had the freedom to fully immerse in my work.  The experience was profound not only creatively, but also personally. I didn't have to cook, clean, attend to work needs, run errands, or mow the lawn.  I just got to be. and take pictures!

My feelings while there of gratitude, opportunity, creative clarity and freedom to express myself were at a very high pitch.

It was just two years ago that I declared my creative focus with photography and began exploring project work. In that time period, not only have I produced a zillion images,  I have contributed to image telling for others through stills, scapes and ideas. It has been superbly fulfilling and rewarding.

I am left with over and over that not only can I do this, I can do it with a very specific artistic signature that I can call my own.   My knowing this with confidence is what has been one of my largest challenges.

My artist residency clarified this for me.

I arrived at Dancing Rabbit at the golden hour. That glorious end of the day period of time where the sun is descending. The glow is so very golden, intoxicating and warm, with striking long and delicious shadows. The surround expression is magnificent, literally everything looks kissed by light!  The grass path I found myself on led me to a tremendous garden with these amazing huge chickens perched on a hand crafted gate.  In the not too far distance I saw these lush green rolling hills.   If anyone had been with me in those first walk moments they would have observed me holding my breath, smiling inside with all of me, and saying to myself - I am here, I am here, I am here!! I snapped and snapped and snapped.

That evening I uploaded what I had taken,  thinking ...gosh - have I set the tone for what I want to do here? Am I really going to be able to do this?  I wondered how the heck am I going to process all of these photographs?   The answers found me - trust your judgement, decide your favorites and let it go.  Thank you universe. This is what I did the full ten days of my residency.

What I amassed was a Facebook Page Portfolio that was about a tenth of what I had shot.  Doing so provided an immediate experience not only for myself, but also for the folks at Dancing Rabbit. In a pinch it also provided an easy show and tell.  In re-cap. I shot over 3000 images!  WEEKS in post-production had me get that count down to under 2000. I then uploaded and sorted images here into 14 useful categories.

Of the entire residency I would say these five things struck me - i could list many more but this post is already long enough.

1.  the folks at dancing rabbit are what make the experience while there

2.  milking goats at sunrise is an awesome photo opportunity

3.  raising animals for milk, eggs and butchering is absolutely fascinating to me

4.  composting toilets are not oookey

5.  everyone sure loves pizza

My hosts Alline and Kurt befriended me with open arms, wonderfully warm hugs, tremendous laughter and much patience.   Their sharing, encouragement, great cooking and my very comfortable stay left me feeling like a queen.   I am grateful.

The VERY best news out of this entire experience,  besides my images being of use to the community of Dancing Rabbit, is that they have asked me to return.  Not just once, but three additional visits. WOW!

Soft Launch At Ewing Manor

October 07, 2013  •  Leave a Comment

FALL OF 2012 found Bloomington/ Normal's very first food truck - TWO BLOKES AND A BUS on it's first run!  They had just past their health inspection! The crisp fall setting at Ewing Manor) was gorgeous. The 1958 Double Decker bus named Victoria looked mighty fine.  The food, all scratch made was absolutely delicious.  The bus galley was a tad crowded, and smokey,  no worries - nothing a few different fans and a bit of choreography couldn't fix!!  There was something quite lovely about a line of people waiting for globally inspired street food!!

I have been photographing this project since March of 2012

I Was Awarded An Artist Residency!

September 25, 2013  •  Leave a Comment

in just three short weeks I will spend 10 days deeply immersed in my artistic expression.  Photography.  Oh my gosh.  My artist residency is hosted by Milkweed Mercantile the only strawbale solar and wind powered B&B in the U.S.  The Inn is part of Dancing Rabbit's EcoVillage ( Rutledge, MO ), a 280 acre off grid, sustainable, intentional community founded in 1997.

I fell in love with Alline and Kurt, long time residents of Dancing Rabbit and owner/founders of The Milkweed Mercantile, when Alline spoke at an event.  Alline had just been awarded the Eileen Fisher's Business Grant for Woman Entrepreneurs.  Wow.  I was very inspired by Alline and super curious about Dancing Rabbit.

Artists were selected for their:

  • artistic caliber
  • specific focus relevant to Dancing Rabbit's mission for outreach and education
  • artists ability to communicate the atmosphere and values of Dancing Rabbit
  • artists potential for personal growth.

My artist submission included an application and small fee, my resume, 10 select images w/detailed descriptions, plus a very specific project idea.  The project I proposed is from the perspective of a wide eyed curious and affectionate admirer of all things Dancing Rabbit.  My specific curiosity is about the key people who make Dancing Rabbit what it is today - to me,  that could be capturing part of the day of the master builder, gardener, and innkeeper, to highlighting an artisan, a child...maybe even the local dog!

Resident artists in addition to having full access to Dancing Rabbit are to gift 8 hours of instruction to their community.   I can't wait to teach collage while there. I am to donate a final piece to the Inspired By Dancing Rabbit: Artist In Residence Collection.  A public presentation is also expected.

When Alline officially emailed that I had been awarded a residency I was in the middle of making a huge batch of french onion soup.  While i had tears streaming down my face from all those onions.  I also had great tears of joy from the news.  Pinch me, I was awarded an artist residency!!

I look forward to sharing more about my Dancing Rabbit experiences and photography!!

Below are the images i submitted for my application ( some of the projects shared here include:  the good to go campaign, two blokes and a bus, and blooming gardens)

I just wanted to update you.  this spring i delightfully began to photograph a master gardener's garden.  i have spent time at each unfolding of spring, summer and now the beginnings of autumn.  I feel like i have become quite familiar and fond of their stunning space. who wouldn't right?  I lose time here.  love that.  hundreds of images later, i am not sure quite what to do with all of them - perhaps picking a favorite or two or three??   Here is the FULL portfolio if you care to peek.  warning:  epic beauty!!

The Artistic and Subconscious Expression Of Collage

September 18, 2013  •  Leave a Comment

Today a local gal hosted another one of my collage workshops.  The collaboration was a meeting of the minds of sorts, pretty darn neat when you meet someone new and they want to come out and play.  My collaging life began in the 90's and has been a reliable way to share expression or to sooth or search my inner self creatively.  I have been teaching this specific process ( inspired by Julie Cameron's Artist Way ) for over a decade now.   The method builds community and trust, we tear images that speak to us in the moment and then assemble something that appeals to our inner voice.   I continue to marvel at how each and every time I facilitate a workshop, the results are inspiring, insightful, beautiful and very very fun.   Check out the collages from this morning!!

Testimonies:

From Barb:  This was such a great workshop on so many levels. It felt good to play again. It felt good to create something. It felt good to get out and meet new people. It felt good to have your piece looked at by others and to hear how they saw it. It felt good to learn that creating opens yourself up even to yourself. Karen and Michele thank you for making me feel good this morning!

From Jess: I had a wonderful collage experience! I'm so thankful for Karen for being in my life and inspiring me to try new things and find inner artistic me again. I am happy I met new people and am able to make new connections, and it was a beautiful day to art (any day is a beautiful day to art) with beautiful people!
