Undiscovered Species is the theme this year for Make.Shift's Kids ArtWalk
The group youth student/local artist exhibit opens on Friday's Art Walk through May
My student Rowan from Samish Woods Montessori writes:
This creature is an alien from an unknown place. It can go without food for decades though it needs water often. In order to get food, it needs to travel down to the mountains of Earth and eat rocks because its home planet has different minerals than Earth. This is the reason it has only been seen once, when it flew over Bellingham to get to Mt. Baker. Its pet peeve: volcanos; too hot to eat, though rocks are good with a little bit of spice. It is solitary.
Student's Art:
My Artist Statement: “Amber The Alien Cat flies down to Mt Baker for its very rare feasting of rocks. The orange topped rocks are extra spicy."
Bellingham self taught creative Karen Hanrahan is middle-aged and owns a cat named Amber. She makes quilt like art with paper.
Rowans drawing reminded me of my cat. Most of the image resources are from an Amber The Cat Calendar

Allied Arts of Whatcom County hosts an annual group exhibit that highlights artists that recycle/upcycle within their creative process.
RARE provides a platform for eco-friendly artists to showcase their art created from recycle materials. RARE also promotes art organizations and facilities that incorporate sustainability in their facilities and programs. One of our main objectives for this event is to educate the community on the role that the arts can play in the sustainability movement.
This year’s RARE event will provide an entertaining, socially distanced, environment that showcases pieces from numerous, diverse artists using a variety of recycled materials for a month long exhibit at the Allied Arts Gallery. We invite Exhibiting artists with a passion for art created from recycled materials to become a part of RARE. Attendees are inspired to take home innovative ideas that recognize the value of using resources creatively.
RARE is made possible by many generous business partners.

Third Annual Powerful Little Things
Often when we think of art’s influence on our society, we think of large sculptures, giant murals, and installations. But anyone with a beloved piece of art on their wall knows that art affects us just as much, if not more, on a personal level.
There is something beautiful about the accessibility of small art pieces that can fit into collectors’ homes and influence their daily lives- and something intimate and exciting about being able to take in the full message of the artist at once!
That’s the power in small art pieces, and that’s what this market and exhibition of artwork sized 24” x 24” and smaller is all about!
We hope you’ll explore our market exhibition in our 3-D Virtual Gallery above and think about who on your holiday list needs a one-of-a-kind gift. And just as importantly, we hope you’ll consider collecting a powerful little piece for your own wall!
